Expansion Joints
Besides accommodating movement and loading, expansion joints in offices and hotels must be easy to keep clean and support loading from staff or guests and hotel services. In addition, they must remain flush with the finished floor providing a ‘no bump’ to provide smooth transit for pedestrians and most particularly those with disabilities. They should meet all current disability legislation requirements through the entire movement cycle of the jointing system. Vexcolt’s expansion joint systems have been designed meet current European and USA Disability Legislation (ADA).
Control Joints
Offices and hotels often have high quality floor finishes in public areas and control joints should be laid to form 6 metre x 6 metre bays to accommodate local moisture movement and to compensate for small deflections arising from thermal expansion and contraction.
In these environments it is strongly recommended that control joints with rigid side plates are installed in floors. These rigid plates help protect and support the vulnerable edges of paving units from the worst rigours of impact and abrasion from pedestrian and other traffic.
